Starting an IVF cycle is a rollercoaster of emotions—exciting because you’re finally on the path to the family you’ve dreamed of, but also nerve-wracking and potentially stressful. One of the challenges many women face during IVF is managing the side effects from the hormone stimulation medications. In this post, we’ll explore some common IVF side effects and share strategies to help you manage them while staying focused and confident on your journey.
Important: Always contact your medical team if you experience severe side effects, such as high fever, shortness of breath, or excessive pain.
Common IVF Side Effects & How to Manage Them
Skin Breakouts
Hormonal changes from fertility medications can often lead to acne or skin irritations. If you find yourself struggling with breakouts, be sure to cleanse your face twice daily to remove excess oil and bacteria. Don’t forget to remove all makeup before bed. If you had hormonal breakouts in your teen years, you’re more likely to experience them now, but you can combat this by choosing skin care products that are gentle and safe for pregnancy.

Bloating
Bloating and stomach discomfort are common during IVF due to the enlargement of your ovaries and the development of multiple follicles. In a natural cycle, only one follicle matures, but during IVF, several follicles develop, which can cause discomfort. Bloating typically decreases after egg retrieval, but in the meantime, make sure you stay hydrated, eat fiber-rich foods, and incorporate low-impact exercises like a slow 20-minute walk or gentle yoga.
Headaches
Hormonal fluctuations can also trigger headaches. Though this is a common side effect, it can still be unpleasant. For relief, try resting with a cool compress on your forehead. Another remedy is squeezing half a lemon into warm water to help flush out toxins. Be sure to check with your doctor about safe over-the-counter pain relievers for your cycle.

Fatigue
An increase in hormones, particularly progesterone, can leave you feeling more tired than usual. The stress and emotional toll of fertility treatments add to this exhaustion. Be gentle with yourself during this time and allow for extra rest when needed.
Mood Swings
The hormonal shifts during IVF can cause mood swings. If you’re already feeling emotionally drained from the IVF process, these fluctuations can intensify your feelings. Before starting your cycle, take some time to identify coping strategies that help you stay calm and centered. Prioritize these strategies when you feel overwhelmed or moody.
Coping Strategies for IVF Side Effects
Hydrate: Drinking plenty of water is essential during IVF. Staying hydrated helps alleviate physical discomfort and supports your body’s natural processes during stimulation.
Stay Active: Light exercise, such as walking or gentle yoga, can improve circulation and help you feel more balanced. Even short bursts of movement can have a positive effect on your mood and energy levels.
Acupuncture: Acupuncture can be highly effective in reducing the side effects of hormone stimulation during IVF. Consider seeing an acupuncturist for added support.
Rest: IVF is exhausting. If possible, plan ahead to ensure you have plenty of time for rest and recovery throughout your cycle.
Self-Care: Have a self-care toolkit ready with strategies that work best for you, whether it’s journaling, meditation, or taking a warm bath.
Accept Support: IVF can be emotionally complex. Make sure you have time scheduled to talk with a coach, therapist, or trusted friend to work through your feelings and receive support.
